User Guide

This guide covers everything you need to know about using Legend day-to-day. You’ll learn how to create and manage entities, build relationships, search effectively, and visualize your organizational knowledge.

Legend uses a simple but powerful entity-relationship model to represent your organization:

Entities are the building blocks. There are three types:

  • Landmarks: Services, projects, resources, documentation, vendors, and other points of interest
  • People: Individual contributors with expertise and team affiliations
  • Teams: Organizational units with hierarchical structure

Relationships connect entities and provide context:

  • Ownership: Which team or person owns a landmark
  • Dependencies: Which landmarks depend on other landmarks
  • Associations: Loose connections between related entities
  • Membership: Which people belong to which teams

This model turns a simple list into a navigable knowledge graph. When you understand how entities relate to each other, you can answer questions like “Who owns this service?”, “What depends on this database?”, or “Who should I contact about this project?”

Documentation

The dashboard is your starting point. It displays all entities as cards in a grid layout. From here you can:

  • Search: Use the search box to find entities by name, description, tags, or documentation content
  • Filter: Narrow results by entity type (landmarks, people, teams), tags, or categories
  • Sort: Organize entities by name, creation date, or custom criteria
  • View modes: Switch between grid view and list view
  • Quick actions: Click any entity card to open its detail drawer

Each entity card displays key information at a glance:

  • Icon or avatar: Visual identifier for the entity
  • Name and subtitle: Entity name and owner, title, or parent team
  • Description: Brief summary of what the entity represents
  • Priority links: Up to three quick-access links to documentation, dashboards, or repositories
  • Relationship indicators: Visual badges showing dependencies, ownership, or team membership

Click any card to open the detail drawer, which shows complete information including all relationships, documentation tabs, and edit options.

If you’re new to Legend, start with Understanding Entities to learn about landmarks, people, and teams. Then move to Creating Entities to add your first content.

If you’re already familiar with the basics, jump to Relationships to start building connections, or Search and Discovery to find what you need quickly.
