System Settings

System settings control the fundamental configuration of your Legend instance. These settings affect how users interact with the system, how new accounts are created, and how your organization is identified throughout the application.

To access system settings:

  1. Click your user menu in the top-right corner
  2. Select Admin Panel from the dropdown
  3. Click Settings in the admin sidebar

Only users in the Admins group can access system settings.

The organization name appears throughout the Legend interface, including:

  • The browser tab title
  • Email notifications
  • Export reports
  • Audit logs

To update the organization name:

  1. Navigate to Admin Panel > Settings
  2. Enter the new organization name in the Organization Name field
  3. Click Save

The organization name should reflect your company, team, or department. Keep it concise and recognizable.

The email domain is used to validate user email addresses during self-registration. When self-registration is enabled for a specific domain, only users with email addresses matching that domain can create accounts.

To set the email domain:

  1. Navigate to Admin Panel > Settings
  2. Enter your organization’s email domain (e.g., example.com)
  3. Click Save

The email domain should match your organization’s primary email domain. This ensures that only authorized users can self-register.

Legend supports three self-registration modes, giving you control over how new users join your instance.

When self-registration is disabled, new users cannot create accounts on their own. Administrators must manually create user accounts through the admin panel.

When to use:

  • High-security environments
  • Small teams where administrators know all users
  • Compliance requirements that mandate manual account creation

How it works:

  • The “Sign Up” link is hidden from the login page
  • Users must be created by administrators
  • Administrators control all account creation

When single domain registration is enabled, users with email addresses matching your configured email domain can create accounts automatically. Users with email addresses from other domains cannot register.

When to use:

  • Organizations with a single email domain
  • Teams that want to allow self-service registration
  • Environments where all users share the same email domain

How it works:

  • The “Sign Up” link appears on the login page
  • Users enter their email address and create a password
  • Legend validates that the email domain matches your configured domain
  • If the domain matches, the account is created automatically
  • If the domain doesn’t match, registration is rejected

Example: If your email domain is example.com, users with [email protected] can register, but users with [email protected] cannot.

When open registration is enabled, anyone can create an account regardless of their email domain. This mode provides no restrictions on who can join.

When to use:

  • Public or community instances
  • Organizations that work with external partners
  • Environments where open access is acceptable

How it works:

  • The “Sign Up” link appears on the login page
  • Anyone can create an account with any email address
  • No domain validation is performed

To change the self-registration mode:

  1. Navigate to Admin Panel > Settings
  2. Select the desired mode from the Self-Registration dropdown:
    • Off: Disable self-registration
    • Single Domain: Allow registration for users with matching email domain
    • Open: Allow registration for any email address
  3. Click Save

Changes take effect immediately. Existing user accounts are not affected by changes to self-registration mode.

Legend collects anonymous usage telemetry to help improve the product. Telemetry data includes:

  • Feature usage statistics
  • Error reports
  • Performance metrics
  • Configuration information (anonymized)

Telemetry does not include:

  • Entity data (landmarks, people, teams)
  • User information (names, emails)
  • Documentation content
  • Relationship data

To manage telemetry preferences:

  1. Navigate to Admin Panel > Settings
  2. Toggle the Enable Telemetry switch:
    • Enabled: Send anonymous usage data to help improve Legend
    • Disabled: Do not send any telemetry data
  3. Click Save

Telemetry is optional and can be disabled at any time. Disabling telemetry does not affect the functionality of your Legend instance.

All settings changes require you to click Save to apply them. Changes take effect immediately after saving. There is no separate “apply” or “deploy” step.

If you make a mistake, you can revert to previous settings by navigating back to the settings page and making the change again.

Organization Name:

  • Use a name that represents your organization clearly
  • Keep it concise (under 50 characters)
  • Avoid special characters that might cause issues in URLs or emails

Email Domain:

  • Use your organization’s primary email domain
  • Ensure the domain is correct before enabling single domain registration
  • Update the domain if your organization changes its email domain

Self-Registration:

  • Start with “Off” or “Single Domain” for security
  • Switch to “Open” only when necessary
  • Review user accounts periodically if using open registration

Telemetry:

  • Enable telemetry to help improve Legend
  • Disable telemetry if your organization has strict data policies
  • Review the telemetry documentation to understand what data is collected

Cannot save settings:

  • Ensure you have administrator privileges
  • Check that all required fields are filled
  • Verify there are no network connectivity issues

Self-registration not working:

  • Verify the email domain is correct (no leading @ or https://)
  • Check that the self-registration mode is set correctly
  • Ensure users are using the correct email domain

Organization name not updating:

  • Refresh the browser cache
  • Verify the change was saved successfully
  • Check that you have administrator privileges

After configuring system settings, proceed to User Management to create user accounts, or Group Management to set up access control groups.
